Healthy aging is something we all want to do. Since September is Healthy Aging Month, it seems like a great opportunity to mention the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits as you get older.

Chances are, you’ve noticed some changes in your pearly whites as the years go by. Some of them are mentioned in this short video from the American Dental Association, including receding gums, dry mouth, and discolored enamel.

It’s normal for your mouth to go through some natural changes as you age. Don’t worry, though. With proper care and attention, your smile can stay healthy and beautiful at any age! Here are a few tips:

  • It’s extra important to keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams when you’re older. More buildup and tartar tend to accumulate, and your gums are more susceptible to disease. Be diligent about seeing us for professional cleanings every six months – don’t skip them! And twice-yearly checkups give us the chance to nip any issues in the bud before they require major treatment.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste and rinse daily to strengthen enamel against cavities. You may also want to upgrade to an electric toothbrush if you find it’s harder to keep plaque at bay. And don’t neglect flossing. Your inner tooth surfaces need attention too.
  • Talk to your dentist right away if your teeth are shifting, feel loose, or you have mouth pain. Things like ill-fitting dentures, teeth grinding, and gum disease should be addressed promptly before small problems turn into big headaches.
  • Watch your diet to limit sugary and acidic foods that are tough on aging teeth.
