Anxiety Reduction

The care you need — without the experience you've been dreading.

Overview

Dental anxiety is not a character flaw. It's an extremely common response — often rooted in a previous painful experience, a feeling of helplessness, or a sensory sensitivity to the sounds and sensations of dental treatment. At Springs Holistic Dentists, we take it seriously. Our goal is to make every visit feel fundamentally different from what you may have experienced elsewhere.

How we approach anxious patients

We begin every appointment — especially with new patients — with a genuine conversation. No assumptions, no rushing, no judgment. We explain what we're doing before we do it, check in throughout the appointment, and stop whenever you need to. For patients who want additional support, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — a mild, safe, fast-acting sedative that takes the edge off without leaving you groggy. It wears off within minutes of removal, and most patients are surprised by how manageable the appointment felt.

The Holistic Perspective

The connection between anxiety and healing

Chronic dental anxiety doesn't just affect your visits — it affects your health. Patients who avoid the dentist out of fear tend to present with more advanced disease that requires more intensive treatment, which reinforces the cycle. Breaking that cycle requires a practice environment that feels genuinely safe. We've built ours around that goal: calm, unhurried, honest, and completely non-judgmental.

Who This Is For

  • Patients who have avoided the dentist for years due to fear
  • Those with previous traumatic dental experiences
  • Anyone who experiences physical anxiety symptoms — racing heart, sweating, gripping the armrests — during dental visits
  • Patients who want to understand every step before it happens

Before You Schedule

We've helped many patients discover that dental care doesn't have to be something to dread. Come in for a conversation first — no treatment required — and we'll figure out together what a comfortable experience looks like for you.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about anxiety reduction in Colorado Springs

Does nitrous oxide work for severe dental anxiety?

Nitrous oxide is highly effective for mild to moderate anxiety. It induces a relaxed, somewhat euphoric state and makes the appointment feel much shorter. For severe dental phobia, we discuss the full range of options — including referral to practices offering IV sedation when appropriate.

Can I drive myself home after nitrous oxide?

Yes. Nitrous oxide clears from your system within 5–10 minutes of the mask being removed, leaving no lingering impairment. The vast majority of patients drive themselves home without any issue.

Will I be unconscious during treatment with nitrous oxide?

No. You'll be fully conscious, able to communicate, and in complete control. Nitrous oxide reduces anxiety and dulls discomfort — it doesn't sedate you to unconsciousness. You'll remember the appointment.

What if I need to stop during treatment?

We stop — immediately, without hesitation, no questions asked. We don't resume until you feel ready. No judgment, no pressure. Your comfort is the priority, and we mean that.

Do you accommodate patients with sensory sensitivities to sounds and smells?

Yes. Let us know before your appointment what specifically triggers your anxiety and we'll adjust accordingly — quieter instruments where possible, frequent breaks, detailed briefings before each step, and a pace that works for you.
